“Life is tons of discipline” those were the words of Robert Frost. One is said to have discipline when they possess the mental resilience to surmount empty passions and faulty habits. Hence, discipline is required in order to take charge of our lives every day. But discipline is neither readily attained nor easily maintained.
Here is a story of a man of integrity who held unto his dignity and refused a $1m offer. If it were you, would you have done same or acted differently?
This man was a reputable coach in college sports. His name is Joe Paterno. He had been a football coach at Pennslyvania state university for almost seven years and loved what he was doing. Then, on December 1972, the unexpected struck.
He got a call from the former president and principal owner of New England patriots offering him a $1.3m pay and part ownership of the franchise plus $100,000 bonus for signing, if he leaves Penn Bill Sullivan and comes over to coach his team on pro football. Meanwhile, at this point in time, Joe Paterno was earning the sum of $35,000 in Penn Sullivan. For the first time in his life, he had to make a decision that will change the trajectory of his life and destiny. He had sleepless nights making that decision.
By and by, he stood his grounds and followed his passion. He knew what college football meant to him and the joy he derives from training his students.
Until his death in 2012, Joe Paterno remained at the helm of the Penn State Nittary Lions doing what he loves the most, helping players thrive both on and off the field and with increased coaching salaries . All these came as a result of discipline to purpose that Joe Paterno displayed. Discipline pays a great deal.
